When Matt Gruetzman first stepped onto a construction site, he realized that safety is personal, not just a set of rules. Every decision, every conversation, every piece of equipment came back to one thing, making sure everyone went home safe.
“Safety isn’t about fear or rules,” Matt says. “It’s about making sure everyone gets home safe. Everybody has kids’ family and friends waiting for them. Things can go bad quickly in construction, so we need to make sure they don’t.”
Matt didn’t start as a safety manager. His journey began in the field where he learned firsthand what pressure, fatigue, and teamwork are like on the ground. Over four years at Analog he moved from labor to leadership and discovered that safety isn’t about enforcement, it’s about connection.
From the Ground Up How Leadership Shapes Safety
Early in his career Matt noticed something simple, but powerful workers aren’t open to leaders they fear. “If workers fear you, they won’t come to you with problems,” he explains. Instead of enforcing compliance through authority, Matt built trust through empathy and approachability. Matt uses the approach of Psychological Safety, highlighted by Amy Edmonson of Harvard. This approach is based on the idea that your team can speak up without fear of punishment or embarrassment. In this way, workers feel respected and safety and that’s when hazards are reported, questions are asked and people challenge unsafe work practices.
He prioritized small-group conversations over large meetings, creating space for honesty. “Instead of talking in front of 35 people they only talk in front of four or five. It makes a huge difference in the quality of conversations,” According to him small adjustments had a big impact. Workers began reporting hazards more quickly, asking questions more freely and supporting each other to stay safe.
The Power of Attention and The Hawthrone Effect
Matt’s leadership reflects a powerful insight that people perform better when they feel seen and supported. There is a concept known as the Hawthorne effect. He explains that having all the documentations right at your fingertips alleviates complacency. User friendly tools and safety talks in small groups to ensure that your workers’ safety truly matters. Combining attention with practical guidance makes processes easier and improves engagement. Safety is about support, creating an environment where people feel respected, empowered, and confident to speak up.
Learning by Example and Social Learning in Construction Safety
People learn best by observing others and practicing what they see, a concept explained through Social Learning Theory by Albert Bandura When leaders model the right behaviors and share their knowledge openly, it sets a standard and helps everyone to do better. Matt believes this approach helps teams learn faster and work safer as experienced workers show best practices and newer ones naturally adopt them. This kind of shared learning builds a culture of safety that grows stronger with every interaction. With regular checks and feedback, leaders can identify problems, provide support, and ensure everyone stays confident and competent.
Managing Multi-Contractor Worksites
Safety doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Matt often coordinates with contractors’ safety teams to ensure everyone follows the highest standards. He explains that “Sometimes their safety rules trump ours, and we respect that. But you can’t always let them walk over you. Safety is pretty black and white, you just need to know what’s right.” His balanced approach of respect, knowledge, and confidence helps create a safe and cooperative environment across multiple companies and teams.
Innovation on Site with Technology That Protects
Matt believes innovation should make work safer and easier, not complicated. From wearable exoskeletons that reduce strain to redesigned hard hats with better chin straps he embraces practical tools that protect workers “These new tools make work safer and easier on the body,”. His team also identifies potential risks before they turn into incidents and keeps records up to date and accessible for everyone.
The Future of Safety Leadership
Matt Gruetzman’s story shows that real safety starts with people, not policies. By combining trust, attention, and practical tools, he builds a culture where workers feel respected, empowered, and confident. When people come first, safety becomes a culture, and everyone goes home safe.
