Working Safely in Bear Country

Why Wildlife Hazards Matter on the Job

In industries that operate across Canada’s forests, mountains, and tundra, wildlife risk isn’t just a theoretical concern, it’s part of the job. And few wildlife hazards carry the same weight (literally or figuratively) as a bear encounter. An unexpected or poorly handled meeting with a bear can ruin your day, to say the least. Avoiding these animals entirely if possible, while still being prepared if one happens is an important part of wilderness workplace safety.

So, how do you stay safe in bear country? You need more than just common sense. You must anticipate behaviour, evaluate environments, and apply practical controls. This isn’t about fearing bears, but rather about being ready to act when it counts.

Know the Signs of Bear Activity

Bears rarely appear out of nowhere. Tracks, scat, markings, and even sounds give away their presence, if you’re tuned in.

Workers in remote environments must analyze these signs to determine:

  • If a bear may be nearby
  • How fresh the noted activity is
  • When a change in route or behaviour is warranted

Recognizing a fresh black bear track from an old grizzly print could be the difference between life and death in the field, because the safest way to deal with a bear encounter is to avoid one.

Evaluate Seasonal and Environmental Changes

Bear behaviour shifts with the seasons. For example, spring means protective mothers and hungry foragers. Fall means calorie loading and bold behaviour. Shorter winters mean longer periods of activity. Educate yourself on what to watch for each season and prepare accordingly.

Workers must also know how to evaluate the environment they’re operating in. Are you planning to work near a salmon run during peak feeding season? Is the area recovering from wildfire, making it more attractive to bears? Your hazard assessment needs to go beyond slips and trips; it should include wildlife awareness and avoidance measures, too.

Prevent Encounters with Proven Controls

Preventing encounters isn’t guesswork or good luck; it’s accomplished using control-focused planning. You can apply field-tested strategies such as:

  • Travelling in groups
  • Making noise
  • Managing waste correctly
  • Keeping food secure in bear-proof containers

Setting up a camp or temporary worksite? That’s where strategic planning of sleeping areas, food caches, and escape routes comes into play. If you’re in bear country, look around and ask, “Would this attract a bear?” every single time you set up a new site or change something about an old one.

Know What to Do

Every bear encounter is different. Defensive, curious, or predatory behaviour each requires a distinct response. When the moment comes, you don’t want to be guessing. You need to judge the encounter type quickly and come up with an appropriate response. Whether that means backing away, standing your ground, or using bear spray with confidence will depend on the situation.

Remember that bear spray is a powerful chemical deterrent, not a magic shield. It works best when you have practiced using it, and when you carry it so it’s easily accessible. If you struggle to find it buried in your pack under snacks and spare gear, or if you don’t know how to pull the trigger, it will not be much use to you.

Knowledge is the Best Protection

Bears may be apex predators, but in the workplace, the smartest animal is the one who takes the training, stays alert, and acts on the signs.

Treat the possibility of a bear attack like the safety-critical situation it is. Evaluate the risk, apply the information you’ve been taught, and don’t let a surprise encounter become a preventable emergency.

Ready to Equip Your Team for Bear Country?

Whether you’re running a remote work camp, managing a field crew, or leading wilderness tours, your team needs more than instincts, they need training grounded in real-world scenarios, expert insight, and regulatory best practices. Reacting correctly to bears doesn’t come naturally. It must be learned.

Fortunately, Bear Safety offered by BIS Safety Software covers everything from hazard recognition to emergency response. And, it was created for Canadian environments where human-wildlife overlap is part of the job.
