What Biology Labs and Safety Culture Can Learn From Aviation: Luca Filippo’s Safety Journey

A slip. A cut. One wrong move and the consequences could be serious.

That’s not hyperbole. It’s the daily reality in biological research labs, where the stakes can be incredibly high. Yet, many labs still treat safety as secondary, while industries like aviation and nuclear energy have spent decades perfecting their safety systems with extraordinary precision.

Luca Filippo sees this gap as an opportunity and he’s bringing fresh momentum to the world of biosafety.

From Helicopters to Hazardous Pathogens

Luca’s journey began in the sky. He was so passionate about flying that he earned his helicopter license before he could legally drive a car. But something else took hold of his imagination: a deep fascination with safety, inspired by Brazil’s emerging focus on safety management systems (SMS) in aviation.

While others tracked flight hours, Luca delved into risk models, accident data, and systems theory. His goal wasn’t just to fly, it was to understand how things go wrong, and how to prevent that from ever happening.

That commitment led him to Europe’s largest business aviation operator and eventually to Canada, where he’s now translating those insights to the world of biosafety.

Why Biology Needs a Safety Rethink

In aviation, the focus isn’t “Who messed up?” It’s “Where did the system fall short?”

In biology labs? That kind of thinking isn’t always the norm.

Lab environments are inherently complex but many still operate without the robust safety culture found in aviation or nuclear sectors. That’s a missed opportunity.

“In aviation,” Luca says, “a slip might bruise your ego. In biology, a slip while handling a pathogen could have far-reaching consequences.”

That realization reshaped his thinking. For years, Luca doubted the Heinrich Pyramid model linking small incidents to major accidents. But in biosafety? “It absolutely applies,” he says.

The Systems Approach: Safety That Scales

Luca isn’t looking to reinvent the wheel. Instead, he’s equipping lab professionals with the same powerful tools that have helped aviation and nuclear industries thrive:

And these tools are making a difference.

By introducing structured, proven safety methods to lab settings, Luca is doing more than protecting people, he’s helping them think differently about what safety means.

Because in modern labs, safety isn’t a slogan on a poster. It’s a proactive system that anticipates risks before they unfold.

Thinking of Switching Fields? Here's Your Guide

Luca made the leap from cockpits to containment labs and he did it by staying humble and curious.

His advice?
“Listen more than you talk. Choose frameworks that resonate with the people you’re working with, not just the ones you know.”

He doesn’t transplant aviation practices wholesale. He tailors them, making sure they’re practical and meaningful for the fast-moving, unpredictable world of lab research.

Bottom Line: Safety Is Built In, Not Bolted On

Whether you’re navigating airspace or working with live cultures, the lesson is clear:

Don’t wait for an incident to examine your safety practices.

So, what’s keeping your lab from integrating aviation level safety?

Because if a helicopter pilot can help transform biosafety, there’s every reason your team can take safety to new heights too.
