Creating Safer Workplaces Through Real Connection

For Lisa Rantucci, a career in safety didn’t begin with a long-term plan, it started with curiosity.
Working as an administrative assistant at a major oil and gas site in her early twenties, she kept noticing the energy and purpose of the safety team. They moved quickly, solved real problems, and made decisions that mattered.

One day she asked the safety manager, almost impulsively, “Can I join your team?”
He looked at her and said, half joking and half sincere, “Just remember, you asked for this.”

That simple conversation sparked a ten-year journey. Lisa went on to complete in-house training, earn her Occupational Health and Safety Certificate from the University of Alberta, and pursue additional studies in Psychological Health and Safety and Authentic Leadership.

Today, she serves as a Health and Safety Business Partner for the City of Beaumont, one of Alberta’s fastest-growing communities where she’s committed to making safety approachable, supportive, and human.

Beyond Rules and Regulations

To Lisa, safety is rooted in relationships.

“You can build trust and still enjoy the work,” she says. “Safety shouldn’t feel intimidating. I’m not here to police people. I’m here to help them solve problems and talk through challenges.”

While compliance will always matter, she believes the future of safety depends equally on psychological insight, emotional intelligence, and genuine connection.

“Paperwork has its place,” she explains, “but you can stay compliant without drowning workers in forms. When safety makes sense, people stay productive and engaged.”

The Growing Importance of Mental Health

One of the most urgent issues Lisa sees today is the rise of mental health concerns.

Over the last 18 months, Beaumont has noticed more stress-related disability claims and employees asking for meaningful tools, not surface-level training.

To address this, Lisa and her team partnered with Tacit Knowledge to deliver customized de-escalation training across departments.
The response was overwhelmingly positive.

“People finally had a space to talk openly about the situations they face every day,” she recalls. “It made a real difference.”

This year, the city is implementing a broader Psychological Health and Safety framework, beginning with a workforce-wide survey to identify key pressures and opportunities for support.

Transforming Safety Through Technology

When Lisa first joined the municipality, much of the safety system was still manual and paper-heavy.
One of her biggest accomplishments has been transitioning that system into a fully digital structure using BIS Safety Software, building competency modules, adding video-based training, and simplifying onboarding for seasonal workers.

The impact was immediate:
Property damage in the parks department decreased by 35%.

What started as a multi-year overhaul has now become a streamlined, technology-supported annual workflow that’s easier on staff and more accurate for leadership.

Leadership Lessons That Shape Culture

Not every workplace has been a perfect fit. Lisa remembers leaving one organization after only a few months because senior leadership resisted investing in safety.

“Leadership sets the tone. If they don’t support safety, the system will collapse.”

That experience pushed her to advocate for leadership grounded in empathy and authenticity, leaders who truly listen, respect boundaries, and value the well-being of their teams.

The Road Ahead

Lisa believes the next wave of safety innovation lies in smart, user-friendly technology especially AI.

“Tools that can build forms or guide staff through investigations automatically are game changers,” she says. “The point is to make the work easier, not harder.”

Still, she stresses that technology must serve people, not the other way around.

“Plain language matters. Tools should fit the workers using them, not confuse them.”

A Safety Culture Built on Care

At the heart of Lisa’s approach is a simple philosophy:
Safety is a conversation.

It’s about honest dialogue, trust, and equipping workers with the resources they need to do their jobs confidently and return home safely.

“Safety is about people,” she says. “When we support them, listen to them, and give them the right tools, we’re not just preventing injuries, we’re improving lives.”
