Built on Trust: How Lisa Rantucci is Humanizing Safety at the City of Beaumont

Building Safer Communities, One Conversation at a Time

Lisa Rantucci started her career in safety with a single question: “Can I join your team?”

In her early twenties, she was working as an admin assistant at a major oil and gas facility when she started noticing the safety manager and advisor buzzing in and out of the office, doing interesting, high-impact work.

“I think I would really enjoy joining your team,” she told her manager, without even fully knowing what the job entailed.

His response stuck with her: “Just remember, you asked for this.”

That moment launched a decade-long career. She trained internally, earned her occupational health and safety certificate from the University of Alberta, stacked on diplomas in Psychological Health and Safety and Authentic Leadership, and never looked back.

Today, Lisa is a Health and Safety Business Partner with the City of Beaumont, one of Alberta’s fastest-growing municipalities, and she’s on a mission to make safety human.

More Than Compliance

Safety, to Lisa, is built on trust, not checklists

“You can build a culture of trust and have fun with safety,” she says. “It doesn’t have to be scary or intimidating. I don’t want to be seen as a safety cop. I want to be the person people come to for solutions, advice, or even just a chat.”

That shift isn’t always easy. Some still see safety as paperwork and policing, but Lisa believes emotional intelligence and authenticity are changing the game.

“Compliance is non-negotiable,” she explains. “But we can do it in a way that makes sense, without hours of extra paperwork, so workers stay productive and engaged.”

The Mental Health Imperative

The biggest challenge workers face today? Mental health and psychological safety.

Over the past year and a half, Lisa’s team has seen a rise in short- and long-term disability claims tied to stress and burnout, with employees asking for more support and training.

Last year, Lisa’s department partnered with a local group, Tacit Knowledge, to deliver tailored de-escalation training across the organization, from recreation staff to administrative teams.

The results were powerful: “People were able to ask questions about real scenarios they face every day,” Lisa says. “It was a huge step forward.”

This year, they’re rolling out a psychological health and safety framework, starting with an organization-wide survey to pinpoint the biggest gaps before expanding programs further.

From Paper to Platform​

When Lisa joined Beaumont over four years ago, much of the city’s safety program was still paper based. One of her proudest achievements has been leading a digital transformation using BIS Safety Software, creating competency programs, linking training videos, and streamlining onboarding for seasonal workers.

The payoff was dramatic: “Property damage in the parks department dropped by 35%,” she says.

What began as a three-year overhaul is now an annual, seamless process; an example of technology making safety both more effective and easier to manage.

Lessons in Leadership​

Not all safety jobs have been success stories. Lisa recalls leaving one organization after just three months because senior leadership wasn’t willing to fight for safety.

“Leadership can make or break a safety culture. If they’re not on board, the system will fail.”

That experience cemented her belief in authentic, emotionally intelligent leadership, leaders who listen, show empathy, and understand work-life balance.

Looking Ahead

Lisa is excited about the role technology, especially AI, can play in simplifying safety.

“Being able to drop a form into a system and have AI build it for you is brilliant,” she says. “It’s about working smart, not hard. The tools we use should guide people through investigations and procedures, not make things harder.”

But she’s quick to add that tech is only valuable if it’s human centered. “We still need to use plain language and make sure tools fit the people using them.”

A Culture That Cares

At its core, Lisa’s mission is to make safety a conversation, not a checklist.

She wants workers to feel empowered, supported, and resilient, even in the face of resource constraints and growing community demands.

“Safety is about people,” she says simply. “If we can build trust and give workers the tools they need, we don’t just prevent injuries, we make their lives better.”
