The cost of onboarding fees for companies can vary greatly depending on various factors. However, according to a report published by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the average cost per onboard was $4,425. If you consider this high don’t worry, our calculator uses the average minimum cost per employee a company could face at $167.57. This doesn’t include downtime or lost production hours, and keep in mind most companies pay magnitudes more than this.

Below we’ve broken down how we arrived at our minimum estimate per onboard: Training fees cost on average between 100-500 dollars per employee. There are also many extra costs that come with traveling to off-site training facilities. Some companies lose a whole day of production just to train staff. Paper and Ink costs for onboarding are on average 2.56 dollars per employee. Admin data entry generally costs at least 24.86 dollars per onboard. These admins also have many other duties depending on the industry like our next item “Credential Tracking”.

Credential tracking and storing costs on average 24.92 dollars per new hire. Supplying, reminding, and monitoring training certifications requires more administration the more technical the job is. Instructor costs average 27.90 dollars per employee. This number is easily doubled in manufacturing and other jobs with many safety regulations. Lost production time costs average at least a full day’s pay per onboarding. This is minimum a 100 dollars.

Tips for Worker Induction Training

It’s important to keep the voiceover speed around 145–155 words per minute. When the same course is delivered 20% slower, user feedback often describes it as “boring” or “too dry.” If it’s 20% faster, the overwhelming response is that it’s “confusing” and “hard to follow.” Therefore, it’s crucial to get the pacing right. This is known as achieving high processing fluency.

When developing an online course or orientation, it’s important to have only one point of focus on the screen at a time. Presenting multiple focal points, such as a cool animation on one side and an avatar speaking on the other, can create cognitive overload, which exceeds the limited capacity of the learner’s working memory.

In the past, we often used eye-catching animations to promote client logos and branding, especially when motion graphics were still new. But in high-risk work environments, employees simply want to get the information they need, be tested on it, and get back to work. When we first launched an orientation video that featured these types of animations, we received hundreds of feedback submissions with a common theme. One comment summed it up perfectly: “You wasted 12 seconds of my life on that animation that I will never get back.” We quickly removed these kinds of animations. Lesson learned!

Many studies on humanitarian relief in Africa have shown that large statistical data tends to have less emotional impact. However, when the focus shifts to the story of a single child, the response improves significantly. Applying this to safety training, it’s important not to overwhelm learners with statistics. Instead, focus on one event and its impact on one individual. When done well, this approach resonates more deeply, enhances long-term memory retention, and increases the likelihood of lasting behavior change.
