COURSE OVERVIEW


The Roadbuilders Safety Training System (RSTS), conceived by the Alberta Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association, is a crucial and extensive initiation to the safe practices within road construction and heavy construction.  Authored by health and safety professionals, the RSTS Basic course is a valuable resource for acquainting new employees or as a safety refreshment course for seasoned workers in the road and civil construction sectors. The RSTS Basic Course, structured as 12 consecutive modules, progressively enhances the understanding of critical safety awareness principles.

Intended for all professionals involved in road construction or heavy civil construction - from work crews, traffic control personnel, surveyors, testing staff to heavy equipment operators, the RSTS Basic Course significantly amplifies the learner's capabilities in hazard identification, risk management, and incident reduction at the worksite. The course content is immersive and visually enriching with authentic worksite videos, key concepts and terminologies reiterated by text and imagery, interactive graphics, and conclusive tests at the end of each module requiring an 80% pass rate to complete the RSTS Basic Course and receive the certificate.

RSTS Basic - The Law at Work
Worker's rights and responsibilities; Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation. Course length 20 min

RSTS Basic - General Awareness
Importance of planning, conducting hazard assessments and having a work safe mindset. Course length 30 min

RSTS Basic - General Worksite Safety
Common hazards and risk management on road building and heavy construction work sites. Course Length 30 min

RSTS Basic – Fatigue Management
Understanding and managing fatigue. Course length 30 min

RSTS Basic - Specialized Work
Confined Space Entry; Lock out Tag out; Rigging and Hoisting; Working at Heights; Working around Conveyors; Modified Work. Course Length 30 min

RSTS Basic - Working with & around Mobile Equipment
Safe work practices for operating and working around mobile equipment. Course length 30 min

RSTS Basic - Traffic Accommodation
Understanding work zones, traffic control equipment and the role of traffic control personnel. Course length 25 min

RSTS Basic – Working Safely Around Traffic
Identify hazards and manage risks when working next to traffic; safe set up and take down of a work zone. Course length 45 min

RSTS Basic - Utilities
Working safely around overhead power lines and underground utilities; identifying locates. Course length 30 min

RSTS Basic - Excavation and Shoring
Safe work procedures for ground disturbance. Course length 30 min

RSTS Basic – Silica & Dust Exposure Prevention
Hazards of exposure to silica and respirable dust and prevention controls including the proper use of a respirator. Course length 40 minutes

RSTS Basic– WHMIS
Using WHMIS to work safely with hazardous products on the work site. Course length 30 min.
