COURSE OVERVIEW 


The Lawn Maintenance Safety Awareness course is a free offering that provides crucial insight and foundational knowledge pertaining to lawn maintenance safety. This course incorporates an introduction to the relevant Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation, interactive infographic exercises, expert advice, and “In Real Life” stories to emphasize the importance of the course material. 

COURSE TOPICS


This self-guided course, which takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete, includes: 

  • Module 1: Hazard Assessment Procedure 

  • Module 2: Inspection Procedures 

  • Module 3: Equipment Operation 

  • Module 4: Equipment Stowing 

  • Module 5: Safety Communication 

Upon course completion, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the process of hazard assessment, including the responsible parties and the timing of hazard assessments
  • Identify hazards at a lawn maintenance work site using the Energy Wheel
  • Describe common hazard controls at a lawn maintenance work site, and explain the Hierarchy of Controls
  • Participate in safety activities like tailgate meetings and emergency response plans, and understand their contribution to a safe work site
  • Understand how to carry out equipment checks and pre-trip inspections
  • Explain the essential steps in securing loads for transport
  • Outline the steps to safely inspect and stow equipment after use
  • Recognize conditions that foster positive safety communications on the work site, including safety communication responsibilities for different work site parties
