Cargo Securement Training

This Cargo Securement Course is built for commercial drivers, fleet managers, and transportation professionals who must meet North American compliance standards. In just over an hour, participants will cover essential regulations, securement tools, and safe handling techniques. The program blends legal requirements with practical applications, helping drivers build confidence and competence for real-world hauling and inspections.

Cargo Securement Training

Course Overview

The course begins with a detailed introduction to the rules and authorities that oversee securement practices across Canada and the United States. Learners will gain awareness of organizations and standards such as the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA), the North American Cargo Securement Standard (NACSS), and the National Safety Code’s Standard 10. Alberta’s Commercial Vehicle Safety Regulation (AR121/2009) and the Commercial Vehicle Certificate and Insurance Regulation (AR314/2002) are also highlighted.

After establishing this regulatory background, the training moves into hands-on best practices. Participants will review the use of securement systems and devices, techniques for securing different types of loads, and procedures for conducting en-route inspections. Additional lessons cover safe cargo handling, proper weight distribution, front end structure use, and protective equipment. The course also includes dedicated modules on securing specialized loads such as vehicles, coils, logs, and intermodal containers.

By completion, learners will have the skills and knowledge to apply securement procedures effectively, safeguarding themselves, their freight, and fellow road users.

Topic Description

The content is structured to gradually move learners from regulations to practice. First, drivers are introduced to the laws and governing agencies. The program then shifts into securement systems and methods, showing how to properly apply straps, chains, binders, and front end structures. Participants also explore safe handling habits, including inspection routines, PPE, and balance of cargo weight. The course concludes with specialized securement modules on unique load types like logs, coils, and intermodal freight.

This framework prepares drivers to achieve cargo securement compliance and equips them with skills for safer, more efficient operations on the road.
