Time is an unalterable commodity. Not a single moment can be added to an hour, day or week. For professional drivers, time is even more constrained by the hours-of-service regulations. The aim of these regulations is to ensure fatigued drivers are not on the roads. After extended periods of driving, exhaustion can set in, leading to poor decision-making and potentially fatal accidents. For the wellbeing of all road users, adherence to the hours-of-service regulations is mandatory for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers. The Canada Hours of Service Training program aims to enhance compliance among drivers and carriers while optimising available hours, through comprehensive understanding of how these limits impact safety and efficiency.

This training module covers eight frequently used hours-of-service exceptions:
Carriers may decide to allow or restrict the use of exceptions based on their internal policies and practices.
