Canada Hours of Service Training Module 3: Limits North of 60th Parallel

Time is a finite resource. There is no means to extend a minute, an hour, a day or a week. The constraints of time become even more rigid for professional drivers due to hours-of-service regulations. These regulations are in place to prevent tired drivers from getting behind the wheel. Prolonged periods of driving can lead to fatigue, poor decision making, and potentially fatal accidents. To enhance road safety, commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers are required to comply with these regulations. The Canada Hours of Service Training program is designed to assist drivers and carriers in complying with these rules while making optimal use of their available hours, achieved by a thorough understanding of how the regulations impact safety and efficiency.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Time is a finite resource. The ability to extend our time is impossible, making it all the more essential for professional drivers to adhere to the hours-of-service regulations. These rules are designed to ensure road safety by preventing tired drivers from operating vehicles. Extensive hours of continuous driving can lead to fatigue, impaired judgement, and potential road accidents. As a measure to enhance safety, all commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers are mandated to comply with these regulations.

The Canada Hours of Service Training curriculum is designed to assist drivers and carriers in adhering to these regulations while optimizing the use of available hours. This is achieved by a comprehensive understanding of how these limits impact safety and operational efficiency.

The hours-of-service regulations don't typically restrict the volume of work a driver can accomplish, but they do prevent driving beyond designated limits. These limits monitor the total hours of duty or work time and the start of the driver's duty day. They also track the duration of driving that has taken place.

In Canada, there are two sets of rules: one for operating south of latitude 60°N, or the 60th parallel, and another for operating north of latitude 60°N. This training encompasses the rules for drivers operating north of 60°N.

The limits or "clocks" as they are often referred to, monitor a consecutive or cumulative period of time in a workshift. It is crucial to comprehend how these limits or clocks interplay, to avoid operating a commercial vehicle when fatigued.

Canada Hours of Service Training: Limits North of 60th Parallel aims to assist drivers operating north of 60°N in complying with the hours-of-service limits. This is achieved by ensuring they understand the interplay of the limits or clocks, and know when to rest and when to take breaks to reset their hours.
