Avoiding Backing
The most effective way to avoid a backing collision is to avoid reversing. We provide several practical techniques and strategies to reduce the need for reversing by at least 50%. These techniques, not taught in driving schools, are easy to incorporate into daily driving habits, enhancing safety and reducing stress.
Circle check
Many incidents occur when a vehicle is moved without completing a circle check, whether moving forward or backward. The second fundamental describes how to perform a circle check and why it's crucial in preventing backing incidents.
Look Back
Despite being taught to look where we are going since childhood, many employees back up without looking through the rear window or using mirrors. Many drivers don't use mirrors effectively due to misunderstanding how to adjust them properly. This part of the course teaches correct mirror adjustment.
Back slowly
Vehicles behave differently when reversing. Steering changes drastically, and it's easy to lose control when backing at high speeds. The course content highlights the importance of controlling speed and presents techniques to effectively manage speed while reversing.
Use a guide
Having a second person at the rear of the vehicle guiding the driver and looking out for hazards is one of the most effective strategies for preventing backing incidents. We cover guide positioning, communication signals, and actions if the guide moves out of the driver's view.
Avoid distractions

Approximately 60 minutes
Testing conducted throughout this online course, Preventing Backing Incidents, is designed to reinforce the information presented. A mark of 90% must be achieved in order to receive a certificate of completion. Participants are able to repeat the course twice if the pass mark is not achieved. Supplemental materials necessary to complete this course can be accessed online.
Upon successful completion of this online course, a certificate of completion will be available for download and printing.
