Intro to Rail Yard Safety (OSHA)

This OSHA-approved safety training course is designed for individuals working in or around a rail yard. The course offers detailed instructions on safe rail yard operations, working near machinery, and effective communication. This course fulfills the classroom training requirement for occupational safety. It also includes a proficiency checklist for employers to assess practical skills. Upon completion, participants can download and print a certificate or wallet card as proof of completing the Intro to Rail Yard Safety training. NOTE: Certification is designated only by an employer. Certification requirements may vary by state or province. Please refer to local standards for additional occupational training requirements.

Intro to Rail Yard Safety (OSHA)

APERÇU DU COURS

Our Intro to Rail Yard Safety (OSHA) course is recognized by OSHA and the online course complies with OSHA’s classroom training guidelines. The course covers the following subjects:

  • Safety Measures
    • Équipement de Protection Individuelle (EPI)
  • Rail Yard Protocols
  • Working Near Equipment
    • Procedures for Working On, Inside, or Under Equipment
    • Understanding Blue Flag Rules
  • Effective Communication
    • Understanding Flag Signals

The course includes periodic quiz questions to prepare participants for the final written exam. Additionally, an employer’s checklist is provided for conducting a practical examination as required by OSHA.

Estimated Course Duration: The duration of the course varies as individuals learn at different paces. However, the estimated time for this training is between 1.5 and 2 hours.

  • 49 CFR Part 214 Subpart A – General Railroad Workplace Safety
  • Industry Wide Labor-Management Safety Committee Safety Bulletin #28 – Guidelines for Railyard Safety
  • 49 CFR Part 218 Subparts B, C, and D – Blue Signal Protection of Workers, Protection of Trains and Locomotives, and Anti-Tampering Measures for Safety Devices
  • 49 CFR 219.623 – Records (related to Drug and Alcohol Control)
  • OSHA Standard 1917.17 – Railroad Facilities
