DOT “Reasonable Suspicion” Testing Overview for Managers and Supervisors

This course delivers essential knowledge for managers and/or supervisors about DOT’s “Reasonable Suspicion” Drug and Alcohol Testing. Upon course completion, learners should:

•    Acknowledge that federal law identifies six scenarios where motor carrier employees performing “safety-sensitive” roles must undergo drug or alcohol testing.
•    Comprehend the duties that motor carrier managers have in relation to “reasonable suspicion” testing for drugs or alcohol.
•    Recognize the conditions that justify “reasonable suspicion” testing.
•    Be familiar with the procedures that managers or supervisors should adopt to conduct “reasonable suspicion” testing properly.
•    Appreciate that “reasonable suspicion” drug and alcohol testing contributes to removing impaired drivers from the road, thereby enhancing the safety of public highways for all users.
