Poids et dimensions

The Commercial Vehicle Weights and Dimensions course helps drivers and operators understand Canada’s federal and provincial regulations for truck size and weight. Learners will explore the MOU, highway-specific rules, and provincial differences to ensure safe operations and avoid costly violations. By the end, participants will know how to calculate legal limits, interpret restrictions, and stay compliant on the road.

Weights and Dimensions

Aperçu du cours

Canada’s road network supports more than 1.3 million registered commercial vehicles, part of a total fleet of over 26 million vehicles nationwide. While commercial trucks represent a relatively small percentage of traffic, they are linked to around 8% of all collisions and nearly one-fifth of fatal accidents. With such significant impact, strong safety standards and strict compliance with commercial vehicle weights and dimensions are vital.

This online program examines both federal and provincial/territorial regulations governing commercial truck size and weight. Learners will study requirements for width, height, length, and weight, as well as the purpose of the MOU, which brings consistency across jurisdictions. By the end of the course, drivers and operators will know how to avoid costly violations, improve safety, and remain compliant.

After completing this course, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of compliance with weight and dimension laws in Canada
  • Identify hazards and consequences of operating oversize or overweight vehicles
  • Compare provincial and federal standards to determine maximum load capacity
  • Explain how the MOU applies to interprovincial transportation
  • Locate detailed information on local regulations for vehicle weights and dimensions
  • Calculate total allowable vehicle weight accurately
  • Interpret highway-specific restrictions and exceptions
  • Recognize inspection procedures and enforcement actions for non-compliance
