He started on high-rise demolition sites in Houston and is now a Regional Safety Manager at EquipmentShare, where he has about 106 offices to support and spends much of his time on the road across the Gulf Coast. He also teaches the OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 courses. When he took his first safety job, an OSHA 30 was all he had.<\/div><\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div><div><div>Son arriv\u00e9e en s\u00e9curit\u00e9 a commenc\u00e9 par une d\u00e9cision familiale. Apr\u00e8s son passage dans la Marine am\u00e9ricaine, son p\u00e8re lui a propos\u00e9 un choix\u00a0: travailler sous sa direction dans l'industrie g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, ou aller travailler avec son oncle et apprendre le m\u00e9tier de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9. Garrett a choisi la s\u00e9curit\u00e9, croyant que ce serait la voie la plus facile. \u00ab\u00a0Je ne savais pas dans quoi je m'embarquais\u00a0\u00bb, raconte-t-il. Son premier poste \u00e9tait celui d'agent de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 de chantier pour une \u00e9quipe d'environ 80 personnes, un travail qu'il surnommait \u00ab\u00a0le gardien d'adultes\u00a0\u00bb.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>Pendant ses trois premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, Garrett croyait avoir tout compris \u00e0 la s\u00e9curit\u00e9. Puis, apr\u00e8s environ trois ans et demi, il a obtenu son premier poste de gestionnaire de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9, et ce poste lui a fait voir tout ce qu'il lui restait \u00e0 apprendre. Il n'avait jamais mont\u00e9 de programme de sant\u00e9 et s\u00e9curit\u00e9 ni r\u00e9dig\u00e9 de proc\u00e9dures op\u00e9rationnelles normalis\u00e9es, puisque toute son exp\u00e9rience venait du terrain. \u00ab\u00a0J'avais le discours, mais je ne savais pas encore joindre le geste \u00e0 la parole\u00a0\u00bb, dit-il. Chaque \u00e9chelon gravi lui faisait le m\u00eame effet\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Vous ouvrez le livre et vous vous rendez compte qu'il y a encore 36 chapitres.\u00a0\u00bb<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>\u00ab\u00a0Pendant mes cinq premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, c'\u00e9tait absolument un moyen d'arriver \u00e0 mes fins\u00a0\u00bb, reconna\u00eet Garrett, qui ajoute que la peur d'\u00e9chouer le poussait davantage que la passion. La passion est venue lorsqu'il a trouv\u00e9 son cr\u00e9neau et compris que le travail allait bien au-del\u00e0 de l'ensemble de r\u00e8gles qu'il y voyait au d\u00e9part. \u00ab\u00a0Aujourd'hui, la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 pour moi, c'est enseigner, c'est parler, c'est converser avec tout le monde\u00a0\u00bb, dit-il. \u00ab\u00a0Je r\u00e9p\u00e8te constamment que la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 est une conversation.\u00a0\u00bb<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>Il applique la m\u00eame approche aux succursales qu'il appuie. Lors d'une visite, il discute avec le directeur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, le responsable du service et les techniciens, et il accompagne les chauffeurs dans leurs trajets. \u00ab\u00a0Ces audits que nous devons faire, ce n'est pas juste une case \u00e0 cocher sur une feuille pour moi\u00a0\u00bb, explique-t-il. Selon lui, \u00ab\u00a0si je vais m'investir dans quelque chose, je dois savoir en qui j'investis\u00a0\u00bb. Il a appris \u00e0 ses d\u00e9pens que le message a du mal \u00e0 passer de cette fa\u00e7on. Aujourd'hui, il travaille dans l'autre voie, o\u00f9 \u00ab\u00a0la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 est un soutien aux \u00e9quipes d'exploitation\u00a0\u00bb, et il constate que les directeurs des op\u00e9rations y r\u00e9agissent beaucoup mieux. Il croit toujours que la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 doit passer en premier. La diff\u00e9rence tient \u00e0 la fa\u00e7on dont il parle de lui-m\u00eame et de la culture. \u00ab\u00a0Il faut d'abord se vendre, puis on peut vendre le message\u00a0\u00bb, dit-il.
