lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW152085865 BCX0\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not telling you to do this because my book says you have to do it this way,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/graham-jackson-24259b194\/\">Graham Jackson<\/a> says. &#8220;It&#8217;s because I want you to get home safe at the end of the day.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP Selected SCXW152085865 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW211622428 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW211622428 BCX0\">Jackson is the Health and Safety Manager at\u00a0SkyFire\u00a0Energy, one of Western Canada&#8217;s largest solar contractors. The employee-owned company has been installing solar across the West since 2001. Like a lot of good safety people, he came up through the trades, not a classroom. He grew up on a farm in southern Alberta, rodeoed, and had his carpentry ticket by sixteen. He is also unusually open about what turned him toward safety, and he wants it that way. &#8220;I&#8217;m proud of my story,&#8221; he says. &#8220;It&#8217;s not something I&#8217;m ashamed of.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP Selected SCXW211622428 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-17fb40f e-con-full e-flex wpr-particle-no wpr-jarallax-no wpr-parallax-no wpr-sticky-section-no wpr-column-slider-no wpr-equal-height-no e-con e-child\" data-id=\"17fb40f\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0aabf73 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0aabf73\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 id='the-accident'  class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The accident<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-64e35b1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"64e35b1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW184639718 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW184639718 BCX0\">In 2014, Jackson was a project manager for a demolition company. The operator called in sick, so he stepped in to keep the site moving, cutting man-doors into an elevator\u00a0shaft\u00a0and hoisting out chunks of concrete with a 2,600-pound anchor set into the roof. The anchor sheared in half. The concrete came down on him in a stairwell, where there was nowhere to move, and pinned his arm.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP Selected SCXW184639718 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW8876271 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8876271 BCX0\">He lost\u00a0roughly 75 percent\u00a0of the use of his right arm. The damage was internal, a full-thickness tear in what his surgeon called &#8220;the black box&#8221; of the wrist: supposed to be indestructible, and once it goes, beyond repair. What came after was in some ways harder than the injury itself:\u00a0roughly three\u00a0years without a paycheck, thirteen appeals before his claim\u00a0was\u00a0recognized, and a relationship that came apart under the strain. By the end of that fight, he nearly took his own life. What pulled him back, at the last possible moment, was his young son calling out his name. He calls the boy his little\u00a0angel, and\u00a0says his son still does not know that he saved his father&#8217;s life. He has spent years in therapy since, and he tells the whole of it now, on purpose, because he has watched how fast a workplace injury can pull a person under. He still believes he was right. The rules do not bend, but the tone does. Yes, it has to be done this way, &#8220;but not in a threatening tone.&#8221; When crews trust that he is working in their interest rather than his binder, they stop dreading him showing up on site and start welcoming it.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW138572179 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW232097931 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW232097931 BCX0\">The proof he is proudest of is not a number.
