spaces stand apart. These spaces pose their own hazards and they also increase other risks, from toxic atmospheres to hot work. The moment a worker steps across that entry plane, every movement demands precision, preparation, and teamwork. Safe confined space entry is a system built from trust, planning, and well-rehearsed control measures. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c5f3fbf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c5f3fbf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 id='what-is-a-confined-space'  class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is a confined space? \n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cef15a1 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget-mobile__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cef15a1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before anyone enters a confined space, everyone needs to be on the same page about what they are. A confined space isn\u2019t just \u201ctight.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under Canadian Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, a confined space is:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fully or partially enclosed\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not meant for continuous human occupancy\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designed with limited or restricted entry or exit\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p style=\"font-weight: 400; margin-top: 15px;\">This means that tanks, silos, trenches, and sewers are confined spaces, along with anything else that meets this definition.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both the setup of the space (for example, poor ventilation or a blocked exit) and materials in the confined space (such as water, grain, fumes, or gases) can turn routine work into a crisis within minutes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why each confined space in the workplace must be identified, marked, and then assessed before anyone crosses the plane of entry. Every safe entry relies on four roles, each essential and non-negotiable:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The employer\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entrant\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The attendant\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entry supervisor\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p style=\"font-weight: 400; margin-top: 15px;\">Let\u2019s look at the responsibilities for each role more closely.<\/p><p><b>The Employer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> creates and maintains the confined space program. This means they\u2019re involved in identifying hazards, establishing permits, and ensuring training and rescue readiness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>The Entrant<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the worker or who physically enters the confined space. There may be one or multiple entrants. Entrants are required to be fully trained, equipped, and fit for duty. Throughout the entry, they maintain constant communication and must exit at the first sign of distress or alarm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>The Attendant<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the person who stays outside the confined space and ensures the safety of the entrants. An attendant must never enter the confined space, no matter the circumstances. While the entrant works, the attendant is the one who maintains communication, monitors conditions, records data, and initiates rescue if something goes wrong. This person might also be called a monitor or tending worker.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>The Entry Supervisor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> oversees the entire process, verifies controls, and halts the entry if conditions shift.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This structure provides protection. Each role closes a gap the others can\u2019t see, forming a continuous chain of accountability that keeps workers alive.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cdd9329 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cdd9329\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 id='what-is-a-confined-space-entry-permit'  class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is a confined space entry permit? <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9885bb0 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget-mobile__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9885bb0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A confined space entry permit is the legal and procedural heart of the operation.
