widely used fuel sources in workplaces and homes alike. From heating construction sites and fueling vehicles and equipment to powering the barbecue to cook your family\u2019s favourite summer meal, propane is everywhere. Add to its convenience the fact that it\u2019s a perfect fuel for chilly climates and that it burns cleaner than gasoline or diesel, and you\u2019ve got a winning combination! But don\u2019t be fooled: besides being convenient, propane is also dangerous when misused or misunderstood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Propane is a highly flammable, pressurized gas. In this blog post, we are going to talk about a few of the most common dangers that present themselves when using this type of fuel on a worksite. These dangers are very real, but also avoidable when you have the proper knowledge, training, and motivation to keep yourself and your co-workers safe from dangerous interactions with propane gas.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-022b5fe elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"022b5fe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 id='safe-transport-rules'  class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Safe Transport Rules<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-de301bf elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget-mobile__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"de301bf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A propane cylinder in transit is a liability on wheels unless workers apply systematic controls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are certain non-negotiables when it comes to moving propane safely:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep cylinders upright at all times\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secure tanks to prevent movement\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Close the main valve and apply a protective cap to ensure cylinders are sealed\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevent any rolling, tipping, or impact of the vehicle it is transported in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><br \/><\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ignoring these basic rules can lead to life-threatening situations involving explosions and asphyxiation risks. In certain situations, improper transportation can also lead to contact frostbite. Any damage to the tanks in transport could also lead to dangerous situations later during handling or use, not just at the exact moment damage occurs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, as you can see, safe transport is not just about ticking TDG or CSA requirements, it\u2019s about properly securing your load, analyzing the route, evaluating ventilation, and ensuring that documentation is correct and complete.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transportation is sometimes seen as a gap between jobs. Do not stack them, empty or full. That is a house of cards that you do not want to fall!\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because propane gas is heavier than air, it can displace oxygen in low-lying and poorly ventilated areas. This is a major health and safety concern, and propane asphyxiation can lead to injury or even death. Proper ventilation of storage areas is therefore a must.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideally, propane cylinders are stored outside, which ends many ventilation issues before they begin. But if propane must be kept inside, make sure the room is properly ventilated, a door provides a quick exit if necessary, and the cylinders are kept away from doorways, walkways, and airway intakes. Always check local fire codes and CSA B149 requirements before storing cylinders indoors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you can see, proper propane storage is more than setting down a propane cylinder (empty or full) and calling it a day. Always ensure proper storage procedures are in place and adhered to.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cdd9329 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cdd9329\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 id='safe-handling'  class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Safe Handling<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9885bb0 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget-mobile__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9885bb0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safe handling of propane cylinders begins before work gets started! Before hooking up a propane cylinder for any task:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check for leaks with soapy water\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspect date stamps to verify requalification\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scan for dents, rust, or valve damage <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><br \/><\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evaluating each cylinder before use isn\u2019t optional; it\u2019s fundamental.
