Though officially the founder and president of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalhazmat.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Hazmat<\/a><\/strong>, he simply refers to himself as \u201cthe owner.\u201d<\/p><p>With over 30 years immersed in the world of hazardous materials, Swinden has seen firsthand how complacency and disconnection between safety and hazmat management can lead to disaster. \u201cWe\u2019ve drawn an artificial line between safety and hazardous materials,\u201d he explains. \u201cThey should be part of the same conversation, not separate silos.\u201d<\/p><p>He points out that this divide is particularly visible within Canadian organizations where EHS professionals often wear multiple hats unlike in the United States, where roles are typically more specialized. \u201cThat gap leaves workers exposed,\u201d he states firmly. Closing this gap has been the driving force behind his career.<\/p><div class=\"cust-green-gradient\"><em>&#8220;Hazmat is frequently sidelined and shuffled away. Most of the time, safety personnel have absolutely zero understanding of hazardous materials. Eighteen years ago, the company\u2019s rebranding marked a turning point signaling a commitment to evolving alongside changing regulatory landscapes. \u201cIndustries move quickly,\u201d he emphasizes. \u201cIf you\u2019re not adapting, you\u2019re falling behind.\u201d<\/p><\/div><div><h2 id='real-lessons-from-the-field'  style=\"text-align: center;\">Real Lessons from the Field<\/h2><p>Throughout his career, Swinden has encountered countless incidents that shaped his belief in competence over credentials. One chlorine gas emergency triggered by improperly stored waste forced the evacuation of more than 100 homes and businesses. \u201cThat\u2019s when you realize that a wall certificate doesn\u2019t mean much,\u201d he notes. \u201cIn a courtroom or during a gas release, only real skill and understanding can protect people.\u201d<\/p><p>He emphasizes that safe chemical management demands both precision and awareness. \u201cPeople forget that a product and its waste form share the same hazards,\u201d he explains. The smallest mistake like mixing incompatible materials can lead to catastrophic reactions. To him, safety is not theoretical; it\u2019s practical, measurable, and learned through experience. \u201cErrors can teach you,\u201d he says. \u201cBut only if you\u2019re willing to see and correct them.\u201d<\/p><\/div><div><h2 id='changing-the-safety-mindset'  style=\"text-align: center;\">Changing the Safety Mindset<\/h2><p>Swinden\u2019s greatest challenge hasn\u2019t been technical, it\u2019s cultural. He observes that many organizations react to safety concerns rather than anticipate them. \u201cCompanies push training onto employees but rarely train themselves,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s a leadership problem. Changing mindset takes time, but it\u2019s essential if you want to stay ahead of risk.\u201d<\/p><p>He recalls an audit that revealed 83% of shipping documents were inaccurate, an administrative lapse with serious consequences. \u201cImagine a responder arriving at a site and discovering the paperwork doesn\u2019t match the scene,\u201d he warns. \u201cIn the end, those errors become liabilities worth millions. Documentation isn\u2019t paperwork, it\u2019s part of your emergency response plan.\u201d<\/p><div class=\"cust-green-gradient\"><em>&#8220;We\u2019ve had to call in the bomb squad a couple of times in the past. Three years ago, I got called to a mobile trailer. They had stockpiled chemicals for 15 years and then skipped town.<\/em><br \/><em>We had to clean this trailer full of chemicals and hazardous items. Situations like that are nerve-wracking because there is no documentation. There is no compliance whatsoever, and so there\u2019s no sense of safety.&#8221;<\/em><br \/><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kevinswinden\/?originalSubdomain=ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Swinden<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\">\u2013\u00a0 President<\/span><\/div><\/div><div><h2 id='preparedness-as-a-way-of-life'  style=\"text-align: center;\">Preparedness as a Way of Life<\/h2><p>For Swinden, readiness goes hand\u2011in\u2011hand with survival. During one training exercise, a worker nearly suffered a serious injury after running into a forklift path while fetching spill supplies. \u201cThat hazard had nothing to do with the spill,\u201d he points out. \u201cPreparedness means seeing beyond the immediate problem, it\u2019s understanding your environment as a whole.\u201d<\/p><p>He sees safety culture as the foundation of resilience, not just compliance. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about preventing mishaps,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt\u2019s about building a mindset that prioritizes awareness, foresight, and responsibility across every level of the organization.\u201d<\/p><\/div><div><h2 id='the-role-of-technology-and-the-road-ahead'  style=\"text-align: center;\">The Role of Technology and the Road Ahead<\/h2><p>Though Swinden describes himself as \u201cold\u2011school,\u201d he welcomes innovation that enhances, rather than replaces, worker competency. \u201cIf technology helps make things safer, I\u2019m all for it,\u201d he says. \u201cBut if it encourages shortcuts or undermines understanding, it\u2019s not progress.\u201d<\/p><p>He supports Canada\u2019s move toward digital documentation and electronic transportation records, a step he believes will reduce costly errors and facilitate better emergency response. \u201cThe transition will take time,\u201d he acknowledges, \u201cbut digitization could eliminate one more point of failure.\u201d<\/p><\/div><div><h2 id='advice-for-the-next-generation'  style=\"text-align: center;\">Advice for the Next Generation<\/h2><p>Swinden encourages newcomers in safety and hazmat management to invest in mentorship and lifelong learning. \u201cMost of what I know came from mistakes and from people who took the time to teach me,\u201d he reflects. \u201cReal-world experience teaches you things that classrooms simply can&#8217;t.\u201d His advice is simple: be curious, stay humble, and commit to growth. \u201cA diploma doesn\u2019t make you an expert, experience and consistency do,\u201d he insists. \u201cIf someone\u2019s changed companies 17 times in 20 years, it tells me they\u2019ve never built a sustainable safety culture.\u201d<\/p><\/div><div><h2 id='empowering-a-culture-of-competence'  style=\"text-align: center;\">Empowering a Culture of Competence<\/h2><p>Kevin Swinden\u2019s legacy is not merely a successful company, it\u2019s a movement toward accountability in an industry where errors have consequences.
