Organizations where unsafe behaviors are tolerated often see preventable injuries and fatalities. Darryl Chipman, Director for CASCA, describes the issue: \u201cYou can see it as soon as you switch to the safety topic. People disengage. They think, \u2018Yeah, yeah. Employees don\u2019t see safety as a set of restrictions; they see it as a fundamental part of how they work.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b596f83 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget-mobile__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b596f83\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A prime example is Alcoa Inc., a leading producer of aluminum. In 1987, new CEO Paul O\u2019Neill made worker safety the company\u2019s top priority. At his first investor meeting, he didn\u2019t discuss profits or market strategies; he talked about workplace safety.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b592f10 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget-mobile__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b592f10\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cI want to talk to you about worker safety,\u201d O\u2019Neill said. \u201cEvery year, numerous Alcoa workers are injured so badly that they miss a day of work. Our safety record is better than the general American workforce, but it\u2019s not good enough. I intend to make Alcoa the safest company in America. I intend to go for zero injuries.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0072c84 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget-mobile__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0072c84\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Investors were baffled. Some immediately sold their shares, thinking O\u2019Neill was out of touch. But within a year, Alcoa\u2019s profits hit record highs. By the time O\u2019Neill retired in 2000, the company\u2019s net income had grown fivefold, and its market capitalization had increased by $27 billion. More importantly, Alcoa had become one of the safest companies in the world, with worker injury rates falling to one-twentieth of the U.S. average.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3c6c742 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget-mobile__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3c6c742\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>O\u2019Neill\u2019s approach demonstrated a key principle: when employees see that safety is prioritized, they become more engaged, more productive, and more committed to their work.
