designed to reduce risk. But in the real world, those rules don\u2019t always work as intended. Worse, they can backfire. It\u2019s about making sure people go home in one piece. But when rules focus more on compliance than actual safety, they can create new hazards.<\/p><p>Take <em>tying off at two steps on a ladder<\/em>. Some sites require full fall protection as soon as a worker climbs more than a couple of feet. In theory, that sounds great. In reality, those harnesses create tripping hazards. They get tangled in tools and make movement clunky. As a result, workers end up at <em>greater<\/em> risk of falling.<\/p><p>Or consider <em>mandatory gloves for everything<\/em>. Hand protection is crucial. Yet, requiring thick gloves for tasks that need dexterity, like electrical work or handling small bolts, can reduce grip. This lack of control can make accidents <em>more<\/em> likely. In cases like this, an overzealous rule increases risk instead of reducing it.<\/p><p>\u201cYou start dismissing all the rules when you&#8217;re hit with one that just doesn\u2019t make sense,\u201d said Wes Rundle, a safety manager with years in the trades. \u201cThat\u2019s when it gets dangerous, because some rules really do matter. But if people feel like everything\u2019s just being shoved down their throat, they tune out\u201d\u200b.<\/p><p>That said, <strong>compliance is still critical.<\/strong> Workers should always follow their workplace\u2019s safety policies and defer to official guidelines. The key isn\u2019t to ignore rules but to recognize when a policy could be improved for real-world application. If a rule seems impractical or even unsafe, the right move isn\u2019t to disregard it. Instead, workers should bring concerns to supervisors. They make people ignore the good ones. When workers are forced to follow rules that don\u2019t make sense, they start questioning all safety policies. Mais dans la r\u00e9alit\u00e9, ces r\u00e8gles ne fonctionnent pas toujours comme pr\u00e9vu. Pire encore, elles peuvent se retourner contre nous. Lorsque les travailleurs consid\u00e8rent les consignes de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 comme peu pratiques, d\u00e9pass\u00e9es ou tout simplement ridicules, ils cessent de toutes les respecter, et pas seulement les mauvaises. Le probl\u00e8me du respect aveugle La s\u00e9curit\u00e9 ne consiste pas \u00e0 cocher des cases. Il s\u2019agit de s\u2019assurer que les gens rentrent chez eux sains et saufs. Mais lorsque les r\u00e8gles mettent davantage l\u2019accent sur le respect des consignes que sur la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 r\u00e9elle, elles peuvent cr\u00e9er de nouveaux dangers. Prenons l\u2019exemple de l\u2019attache au deuxi\u00e8me \u00e9chelon d\u2019une \u00e9chelle. Certains chantiers exigent une protection compl\u00e8te contre les chutes d\u00e8s qu\u2019un travailleur monte \u00e0 plus de quelques pieds de hauteur. En th\u00e9orie, cela semble parfait. Ensemble, ils peuvent trouver des solutions qui concilient respect des r\u00e8gles et efficacit\u00e9 en mati\u00e8re de s\u00e9curit\u00e9. Quand les r\u00e8gles poussent les employ\u00e9s \u00e0 se d\u00e9sint\u00e9resser Le plus grand danger des mauvaises politiques de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 ? Elles poussent les gens \u00e0 ignorer les bonnes. Lorsque les employ\u00e9s sont contraints de suivre des r\u00e8gles qui n\u2019ont pas de sens, ils commencent \u00e0 remettre en question l\u2019ensemble des politiques de s\u00e9curit\u00e9. L\u2019\u00e9quilibre : une s\u00e9curit\u00e9 intelligente, pas seulement une s\u00e9curit\u00e9 stricte Les meilleures cultures de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 ne reposent pas sur un respect aveugle des r\u00e8gles. Elles forment les employ\u00e9s \u00e0 r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 la s\u00e9curit\u00e9, \u00e0 \u00e9valuer les risques et \u00e0 prendre des d\u00e9cisions intelligentes. \u2013 Adapter les r\u00e8gles \u00e0 la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 : les politiques doivent \u00eatre adapt\u00e9es au travail concret.
