href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jody-young-crsp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jody Young<\/a><\/strong> has spent 35 years in health and safety. She has shaped policies. She has enforced compliance. She has made a real impact on workplace safety in Canada. Her career spans both public and private sectors. That gives her a unique depth of experience. Now, she leads <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wsps.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Workplace Safety and Prevention Services (WSPS)<\/a><\/strong>. Over the years, she has watched safety regulations evolve. She has seen the challenges companies face in protecting their workers. And she knows what happens when they fail.<\/p><p>She has witnessed the ripple effects of unsafe workplaces. The long-term consequences don\u2019t just impact injured workers. Families suffer. Communities feel the loss. A single lapse in safety can lead to lawsuits, financial ruin, and immeasurable grief. For Young, this is more than just a job. She took a summer placement in a mining company\u2019s environment and health and safety department. That experience changed everything. She saw how safety could mean the difference between life and death.<\/p><p>She started out in industrial hygiene testing, both underground and in surface plants. WHMIS was just being introduced, and she helped with surveys and training. Over time, employers sought professionals who understood both environmental and safety compliance. That demand worked in her favor. She landed key job opportunities and spent years in the private sector.<\/p><p>Mining. Abrasives manufacturing. Construction. Waste handling. Paint manufacturing. Each industry had its own risks. She saw workers injured. She saw how preventable incidents disrupted lives. When safety failed, workers \u2013 and their families &#8211; paid the price.<\/p><p>Then she moved into the public sector. She worked for labour ministries in Ontario and Alberta. The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development sets, communicates and enforces occupational health and safety requirements. WSPS\u2019 role is to focus on providing training and consulting services to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses.<\/p><p>\u201cWe have an important mandate set out in legislation,\u201d Young explains. \u201cWe are part of the prevention system funded by employer premiums collected through the WSIB.\u201d<\/p><p>WSPS works directly with businesses. They help develop safety programs. They conduct risk assessments. They offer hands-on training. The goal is simple, stop accidents before they happen.<\/p><p>WSPS provides guidance on everything from machine safety and robotics to workplace violence and harassment and mental health. Pour Mme Young, c\u2019est bien plus qu\u2019un simple m\u00e9tier. C\u2019est une qu\u00eate visant \u00e0 faire la diff\u00e9rence gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la pr\u00e9vention. Des sciences de l\u2019environnement au leadership en mati\u00e8re de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 Mme Young \u00e9tait \u00e9tudiante en sciences de l\u2019environnement \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9 de Toronto. Elle a effectu\u00e9 un stage d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 au sein du service environnement, sant\u00e9 et s\u00e9curit\u00e9 d\u2019une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 mini\u00e8re. Cette exp\u00e9rience a tout chang\u00e9. Elle a constat\u00e9 \u00e0 quel point la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 pouvait faire la diff\u00e9rence entre la vie et la mort. Elle a d\u00e9but\u00e9 par des tests d\u2019hygi\u00e8ne industrielle, tant dans les mines souterraines que dans les usines de surface. Le SIMDUT venait tout juste d\u2019\u00eatre mis en place, et elle a particip\u00e9 aux enqu\u00eates et aux formations. Au fil du temps, les employeurs ont recherch\u00e9 des professionnels ma\u00eetrisant \u00e0 la fois la conformit\u00e9 environnementale et celle en mati\u00e8re de s\u00e9curit\u00e9. Cette demande a jou\u00e9 en sa faveur. Elle a d\u00e9croch\u00e9 des postes cl\u00e9s et a pass\u00e9 plusieurs ann\u00e9es dans le secteur priv\u00e9 : l\u2019exploitation mini\u00e8re, la fabrication d\u2019abrasifs, la construction, le traitement des d\u00e9chets, la fabrication de peintures. Chaque secteur pr\u00e9sentait ses propres risques. Elle a vu des travailleurs se blesser. Elle a constat\u00e9 \u00e0 quel point des incidents \u00e9vitables pouvaient bouleverser des vies. Lorsque la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 faisait d\u00e9faut, ce sont les travailleurs \u2013 et leurs familles \u2013 qui en payaient le prix. Elle s\u2019est ensuite orient\u00e9e vers le secteur public. Elle a travaill\u00e9 pour les minist\u00e8res du Travail de l\u2019Ontario et de l\u2019Alberta. C\u2019est l\u00e0 qu\u2019elle a pris la mesure de l\u2019impact consid\u00e9rable que pouvaient avoir la conformit\u00e9 et l\u2019application de la r\u00e9glementation. \u201c J\u2019ai senti que je pouvais r\u00e9ellement avoir un impact plus important en mati\u00e8re de s\u00e9curit\u00e9. Les r\u00e9sultats \u00e9taient imm\u00e9diats, et on pouvait voir la diff\u00e9rence. \u201d Jody Young Elle en a \u00e9t\u00e9 t\u00e9moin de ses propres yeux : enqu\u00eates, amendes, proc\u00e9dures judiciaires et familles bris\u00e9es en un instant. Chaque blessure, chaque d\u00e9c\u00e8s, renfor\u00e7ait sa mission. Son travail ne se limitait pas \u00e0 faire respecter la loi. Elle collaborait avec les entreprises pour les aider \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer leurs pratiques en mati\u00e8re de s\u00e9curit\u00e9. Elle faisait d\u00e9couvrir aux employeurs les meilleures pratiques. Se contenter de respecter la r\u00e9glementation ne suffisait pas. Il fallait cr\u00e9er des lieux de travail plus s\u00fbrs. Elle a mis les entreprises en relation avec les organismes publics. Ensemble, ils ont instaur\u00e9 une culture de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 plus solide. Une mission personnelle Pour Jody Young, la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 n\u2019est pas seulement une carri\u00e8re. C\u2019est une affaire personnelle. \u201c Mon propre p\u00e8re a \u00e9t\u00e9 victime d\u2019un accident sur son lieu de travail qui a boulevers\u00e9 sa vie. Je n\u2019ai toujours connu mon p\u00e8re qu\u2019avec une seule jambe \u201d, explique-t-elle. Cette r\u00e9alit\u00e9 a fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 sa vision des choses. Elle a compris les cons\u00e9quences des accidents du travail sur les familles. Son travail d\u2019enqu\u00eateuse n\u2019a fait que renforcer sa passion. Elle s\u2019est assise aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de familles qui ont perdu des \u00eatres chers. Elle les a accompagn\u00e9es tout au long des enqu\u00eates et des proc\u00e9dures judiciaires. Elle s\u2019est rendue chez elles, leur a tenu la main et a \u00e9t\u00e9 t\u00e9moin de leur chagrin de pr\u00e8s. Ces moments ont nourri sa mission. Aucun salari\u00e9 ne devrait souffrir parce qu\u2019un employeur a rogn\u00e9 sur les co\u00fbts ou a simplement manqu\u00e9 de vigilance. Aucun enfant ne devrait grandir sans un de ses parents parce qu\u2019une entreprise a ignor\u00e9 les mesures de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 \u00e9l\u00e9mentaires. Mme Young a \u00e9galement travaill\u00e9 aupr\u00e8s de salari\u00e9s bless\u00e9s. Elle a constat\u00e9 les cons\u00e9quences physiques et \u00e9motionnelles de ces accidents. Des personnes qui s\u2019\u00e9panouissaient autrefois dans leur travail sont d\u00e9sormais confront\u00e9es \u00e0 la douleur, au handicap et \u00e0 l\u2019instabilit\u00e9 financi\u00e8re. Ces histoires ne la quittent pas. Elle estime que le meilleur moyen de pr\u00e9venir les trag\u00e9dies est de favoriser une culture o\u00f9 la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 est valoris\u00e9e \u00e0 tous les niveaux de la hi\u00e9rarchie. Cela implique d\u2019exiger un engagement fort de la part des dirigeants, d\u2019encourager un dialogue ouvert sur les risques et d\u2019\u00e9laborer des politiques qui vont au-del\u00e0 du strict minimum pour prot\u00e9ger v\u00e9ritablement les travailleurs. Le r\u00f4le du WSPS dans le syst\u00e8me de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 de l\u2019Ontario Aujourd\u2019hui, Mme Young dirige le WSPS, un acteur cl\u00e9 du syst\u00e8me de sant\u00e9 et de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 de l\u2019Ontario. Elle d\u00e9crit le WSPS comme l\u2019un des trois piliers d\u2019un tabouret \u00e0 trois pieds. La Commission de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 professionnelle et de l\u2019assurance contre les accidents du travail (WSIB) g\u00e8re les indemnit\u00e9s et le retour au travail, et soutient la pr\u00e9vention. Le minist\u00e8re du Travail, de l\u2019Immigration, de la Formation et du D\u00e9veloppement des comp\u00e9tences d\u00e9finit, communique et fait respecter les exigences en mati\u00e8re de sant\u00e9 et de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 au travail. Le r\u00f4le du WSPS consiste \u00e0 se concentrer sur la fourniture de services de formation et de conseil afin de pr\u00e9venir les accidents du travail et les maladies professionnelles. \u2019 Nous avons un mandat important d\u00e9fini par la loi \u201c, explique Mme Young. \u201dNous faisons partie du syst\u00e8me de pr\u00e9vention financ\u00e9 par les cotisations patronales per\u00e7ues par la WSIB. \u201c Le WSPS travaille directement avec les entreprises. Il les aide \u00e0 \u00e9laborer des programmes de s\u00e9curit\u00e9. Il r\u00e9alise des \u00e9valuations des risques. Il propose des formations pratiques. L\u2019objectif est simple : emp\u00eacher les accidents avant qu\u2019ils ne se produisent. Le WSPS fournit des conseils sur tous les sujets, de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des machines et de la robotique \u00e0 la violence et au harc\u00e8lement au travail, en passant par la sant\u00e9 mentale. Il aide les petites entreprises \u00e0 mettre en place des programmes de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 conformes \u00e0 la l\u00e9gislation. Les programmes de formation sectoriels et les services sur site du WSPS apprennent aux employeurs et aux travailleurs \u00e0 d\u00e9tecter les risques \u00e0 un stade pr\u00e9coce. L\u2019objectif : emp\u00eacher les trag\u00e9dies avant qu\u2019elles ne se produisent. Mme Young souligne que le WSPS ne se contente pas d\u2019offrir des services, il tisse des liens. Les entreprises qui collaborent avec le WSPS b\u00e9n\u00e9ficient d\u2019une assistance d\u2019experts pour \u00e9laborer leurs programmes de s\u00e9curit\u00e9. La s\u00e9curit\u00e9 n\u2019est pas seulement une liste de contr\u00f4le. Elle fait partie int\u00e9grante de leur mode de fonctionnement. Elle en est le t\u00e9moin direct. Les entreprises qui font de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 une priorit\u00e9 fonctionnent mieux. Les salari\u00e9s restent plus longtemps. Le moral s\u2019am\u00e9liore. La productivit\u00e9 augmente. Une obligation morale Mme Young a une conviction fondamentale : chaque salari\u00e9 doit se rendre au travail et rentrer chez lui dans le m\u00eame \u00e9tat qu\u2019\u00e0 son d\u00e9part. Elle consid\u00e8re la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 comme un devoir, et non comme un fardeau. \u201d Il ne s\u2019agit pas seulement d\u2019\u00e9viter les amendes. Les employeurs doivent prot\u00e9ger leurs salari\u00e9s. Le co\u00fbt d\u2019un \u00e9chec est trop \u00e9lev\u00e9. Elle sait que certaines entreprises r\u00e9sistent encore aux mesures de s\u00e9curit\u00e9. Elles les consid\u00e8rent comme co\u00fbteuses, chronophages et bureaucratiques. Mais elle sait aussi qu\u2019un seul
