Workers tasked with remediation of hazardous waste sites are exposed to various safety and health risks. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has established the Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Standard to provide protection for these workers during cleanup processes and equip them to manage the wastes securely and efficiently. Hazardous waste sites are often associated with hazardous waste and other toxic chemicals. However, certain sites also present radiological and biological risks. It is crucial for workers to be trained about these risks and the preventive measures to minimize or mitigate their exposure. The HAZWOPER: Radiation &amp; Biological Exposures course aims to acquaint workers with the kinds of radiation they might encounter on the job, dose limits, postings, and strategies to minimize radiation exposure. Furthermore, it aims to educate workers about various biological agents they need to be aware of and how to guard themselves against bloodborne pathogens, as well as harmful plants, animals, and insects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14.0px\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"title-bar\"> <span style=\"font-size: 18.0px;float: none\"><b>COURSE TOPICS<\/b><\/span> <\/div>\n<div> <\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-size: 14.0px\">\n<li>Ionizing Radiation<\/li>\n<li>Non-Ionizing Radiation<\/li>\n<li>Types of Ionizing Radiation<\/li>\n<li>Sources of Radiation<\/li>\n<li>Effects of Radiation<\/li>\n<li>Measuring Exposure to Radiation<\/li>\n<li>Dose &amp; Dose Limits<\/li>\n<li>Dosimeters<\/li>\n<li>Time, Distance, &amp; Shielding<\/li>\n<li>ALARA<\/li>\n<li>Biological Agents<\/li>\n<li>Poisonous Plants<\/li>\n<li>Poisonous Snakes<\/li>\n<li>Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens<\/li>\n<li>Protect Yourself<\/li>\n<li>Control Measures<\/li>\n<li>Symbols and Colors<\/li>\n<li>And more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><strong style=\"font-size: 14.0px\"><b><b>After completing the HAZWOPER: Radiation &amp; Biological Exposures course, learners will be able to:<\/b><\/b><\/strong> <\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-size: 14.0px\">\n<li>Identify the parts of an atom and the main characteristics of alpha, beta, and gamma radiation<\/li>\n<li>Discuss how radiation is measured and the OSHA dose limits for whole body, extremities, and skin of the whole body<\/li>\n<li>Describe measures to protect themselves from radiation including; time, distance, and shielding; ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles; protective equipment and clothing; safe work practices; and training<\/li>\n<li>Identify the radiation symbol and postings used for radioactive materials, airborne radioactivity areas, radiation areas, and high radiation areas<\/li>\n<li>Recognize the different types of biological agents they could be exposed to at work including poisonous plants, animals, insects, and bloodborne pathogens<\/li>\n<li>Explain the importance of protecting themselves from bloodborne pathogens and what control measures can be taken for protection<\/li>\n<li>Identify ways to prevent contamination when responding to an injury involving blood and what measures can be taken if they are potentially exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> <\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"title-bar\"> <span style=\"font-size: 18.0px;float: none\"><b>ONLINE COURSE DURATION<\/b><\/span>  <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14.0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14.0px\">Approximately 75 minutes<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14.0px\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"title-bar\"> <b>PASS MARK<\/b> <\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0px;float: none\">Testing conducted throughout this online HAZWOPER: Radiation &amp; Biological Exposures course is designed to reinforce the information presented. A mark of 80% must be achieved in order to receive a certificate of completion.
